|The head of the House of Habsburg stepped out of his great granduncle's, Emperor Franz Joseph's I long shadow and became his own man.
||Until 31 October 1966 Doctor Otto von Habsburg was given a hard time by the Austrian authorities. The eldest son of Emperor Charles I of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia, had to visit Tirol secretly. The Crown Prince was often searched by the Austrian police, when they, rarely, found out that he was once again in that Austrian state. Von Habsburg, as a sly fox, always managed to dodge them.
||Amazingly spry and energetic at unbelievable 93 years. Not surprisingly the speech, delivered in Innsbruck at Akademiker Verbindung Austria, centered on Archduke Otto's demand to expand the European Union. Von Habsburg emphasized that in future he would especially like to see, among other states, the Ukraine as a new member state of the EU. On the other hand, he would not like to see the Republic of Turkey in the EU. Nothing dramatically new but difficult issues that have repeatedly been part of the speeches the Archduke has given during the last years, indicating his priorities. |
